Description: <DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>This feature class is a subset based off the Pierce County Soils layer and trimmed to feature only the soils that qualify as potential Mazama Pocket Gopher (MPG) habitat within the City of Puyallup. This layer cannot be used for anything other than locating potential habitat for the Mazama Pocket Gopher in the City of Puyallup as the additional features within the Pierce County Soils layer have been trimmed out of this particular shapefile. Other than excluding the additional soils that were irrelevant to the Mazama Pocket Gopher habitat, there were no modifications made to this layer. To determine which soils were classified as potential habitat, the Pierce County Soils Survey was used in combination with information given by Derek Stinson, Endangered Species Biologist from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Please note, according to the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the only recorded sighting of a Mazama Pocket Gopher within the City of Puyallup was in the 1930's. Therefore this dataset does not guarantee that a Mazama Pocket Gopher will be dwelling within highlighted soils, however it does not rule out the chance. Information from the original Soils layer: The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) digitized this data that was derived from the Private Forest Land Grading System (PFLG) and subsequent soil surveys. The PFLG was a five year mapping program compiled in 1980 for the purpose of forest land taxation. It was funded by the Washington State department of Revenue in cooperation with the DNR, Soil Conservation Service (SCS), USDA Forest Service and Washington State University.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>

Aaron Petersen, Pierce County Planning and Land Services (PALS), GIS Specialist Cort Daniel, Pierce County GIS Dept. created the soils shapefile, derived fields and joined soil descriptions. Nancy Fisher, Pierce County GIS Dept. created the database file of soil description. Notes Land Slide and Erosion Hazards can be made based on a field found in the Soils shapefile called "slope". When using this for steep slope analysis this should only be used in areas where the theme "Steep Slopes" is not available. The DNR data Soils Data Steward has these specific comments, "Soils data is not always particularly accurate. Field checking is advised for any project that intends to utilize general soil map data created by the DNR or the SCS. Variability is the rule when dealing with soils derived from glacial drift (till, outwash, lakebeds, etc.)."
