Potential Mazama Pocket Gopher Habitat - Puyallup

</citeinfo>
</citation>
<descript>
<langdata Sync="TRUE">en</langdata>
This dataset is a subset based off the Pierce County Soils layer and trimmed to feature only the soils that qualify as potential Mazama Pocket Gopher (MPG) habitat within the City of Puyallup. This layer cannot be used for anything other than locating potential habitat for the Mazama Pocket Gopher in the City of Puyallup as the additional features within the Pierce County Soils layer have been trimmed out of this particular shapefile. Other than excluding the additional soils that were irrelevant to the Mazama Pocket Gopher habitat, there were no modifications made to this layer. To determine which soils were classified as potential habitat, the Pierce County Soils Survey was used in combination with information given by Derek Stinson, Endangered Species Biologist from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Please note, according to the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the only recorded sighting of a Mazama Pocket Gopher within the City of Puyallup was in the 1930's. Therefore this dataset does not guarantee that a Mazama Pocket Gopher will be dwelling within highlighted soils, however it does not rule out the chance.
Information from the original Soils layer:
The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) digitized this data that was derived from the Private Forest Land Grading System (PFLG) and subsequent soil surveys. The PFLG was a five year mapping program compiled in 1980 for the purpose of forest land taxation. It was funded by the Washington State department of Revenue in cooperation with the DNR, Soil Conservation Service (SCS), USDA Forest Service and Washington State University.
<purpose>The Department of Fish and Wildlife have classified the Mazama Pocket Gopher (MPG) as an endangered species. Because of this, any habitat that could be potential habitat for the MPG shall require a site visit and investigation to verify whether or not the gopher is present on the site. Specifically, this layer is to be used by City of Puyallup's Development Services Department staff to determine if a site visit is warranted and/or further action towards protecting the Mazama Pocket Gopher.
</purpose>
<supplinf>Information from original Soils layer:
Portions of the Soil and Conservation Study were digitized by the DNR, and imported as an Arc/Info coverage in townships by Pierce County. Any missing areas were digitized by PALS, combined by PALS using mapjoin, and clipped to the County boundary. The remaining township lines were then dissolved.
A shapefile for use in CountyView was created from the coverage. The only fields that are used in the CountyView shapefile (soils.shp) are Shape, Area, St_soil_sy, Pln_code, Spa, Soil_num, Primeag, Septic, Hydric, Soil_desc, slope, and Hydrologic. Two fields were derived, Soil_num and Slope. The Soil_num is based on the Pln_code and Spa fields. Soil_num was created using an Avenue script. The slope field was derived from the Pln_code. Slope was created using an Avenue script. The Soil_desc field was created by joining the Soil_num field to a database file with complete descriptions. The shapefile was then saved with these changes. See Attributes in Shapefile for more details.</supplinf>

<datacred>Ryan Lemay (Planning/GIS intern 2010) & Jennifer Recco (GIS coordinator) for trimming the data to focus on the City of Puyallup. Otherwise all credit goes to the original constructors for the Pierce County Soils Layer which are listed below:
The Washington State DNR provided this coverage to Pierce County. Aaron Petersen, Pierce County Planning and Land Services (PALS), GIS Specialist
Cort Daniel, Pierce County GIS Dept. created the soils shapefile, derived fields and joined soil descriptions. Nancy Fisher, Pierce County GIS Dept. created the database file of soil description.
Notes Land Slide and Erosion Hazards can be made based on a field found in the Soils shapefile called "slope". When using this for steep slope analysis this should only be used in areas where the theme "Steep Slopes" is not available.
The DNR data Soils Data Steward has these specific comments, "Soils data is not always particularly accurate. Field checking is advised for any project that intends to utilize general soil map data created by the DNR or the SCS. Variability is the rule when dealing with soils derived from glacial drift (till, outwash, lakebeds, etc.)."</datacred>

<procdesc>First step was to obtain the Pierce County Soil Survey which was available at the Department of Fish and Wildlife. This document listed all the different soil types along with their Pierce Soil Survey number (PIERCE_SURV in the attribute table) in the front (example: 18C corresponds to Indianola loamy sand, 6 to 15 percent slopes). Next was to confirm Soil types that are designated as potential habitats for the Mazama Pocket Gopher which was through Derek Stinson, Endangered Wildlife Biologist from the Department of Fish and Wildlife who confirmed the soil types and sent list of suitable soils within Pierce County for potential habitat of the MPG.
The last part of the process was to query for soil types that qualify as potential habitat for the Mazama Pocket Gopher. Due to the Pierce Soil Survey shapefile residing within a different server, the original file first had to be exported into a local directory. From there the shapefile was queryed in the attribute table to display only soils relevant to the MPG using the PIERCE_SOIL attribute. The remaining soils were then selected and exported to exclude any irrelevant soils. The result is this shapefile which has been clipped to the city's incorporated limits polygon. Metadata was created along with a layer file for optimal display of the potential Mazama Pocket Gopher habitat (soils) layer.</procdesc>

<idAbs><DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>This feature class is a subset based off the Pierce County Soils layer and trimmed to feature only the soils that qualify as potential Mazama Pocket Gopher (MPG) habitat within the City of Puyallup. Information from the original Soils layer: The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) digitized this data that was derived from the Private Forest Land Grading System (PFLG) and subsequent soil surveys. The PFLG was a five year mapping program compiled in 1980 for the purpose of forest land taxation. It was funded by the Washington State department of Revenue in cooperation with the DNR, Soil Conservation Service (SCS), USDA Forest Service and Washington State University.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV></idAbs>
<idPurp>The Department of Fish and Wildlife have classified the Mazama Pocket Gopher (MPG) as an endangered species. Because of this, any habitat that could be potential habitat for the MPG shall require a site visit and investigation to verify whether or not the gopher is present on the site. Specifically, this layer is to be used by City of Puyallup's Development Services Department staff to determine if a site visit is warranted and/or further action towards protecting the Mazama Pocket Gopher.</idPurp>
<idCredit>Ryan Lemay (Planning/GIS intern 2010) & Jennifer Recco (GIS coordinator) for trimming the data to focus on the City of Puyallup. Otherwise all credit goes to the original constructors for the Pierce County Soils Layer which are listed below: The Washington State DNR provided this coverage to Pierce County. Aaron Petersen, Pierce County Planning and Land Services (PALS), GIS Specialist Cort Daniel, Pierce County GIS Dept. created the soils shapefile, derived fields and joined soil descriptions. Variability is the rule when dealing with soils derived from glacial drift (till, outwash, lakebeds, etc.)."</idCredit>

<suppInfo>Information from original Soils layer: Portions of the Soil and Conservation Study were digitized by the DNR, and imported as an Arc/Info coverage in townships by Pierce County. See Attributes in Shapefile for more details.</suppInfo>

<stepDesc>First step was to obtain the Pierce County Soil Survey which was available at the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Metadata was created along with a layer file for optimal display of the potential Mazama Pocket Gopher habitat (soils) layer.</stepDesc>
