Buffer edges are not to be assumed accurate because it is based upon a polyline feature class of stream centerlines and not the stream's OHWM. This layer is for reference only.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV></idAbs>
<idPurp>This feature class' intended purpose is to be used in GIS to identify property which may be impacted by stream buffers and therefore subject to Puyallup Municipal Code regulation. All buffers are ESTIMATES as they are based upon the streams feature class which is a polyline feature class. Ordinary high water is not indicated in either this or the streams feature class. All buffers are subject to fluctuation based upon field verified OHWM and all should be investigated if indicated near or within a project area. Streams that are categorized as Type III or IV are given the higher buffer width of the Type III stream. </idPurp>

<stepDesc>The original 2003 Critical Areas Update streams shapefile was cleaned up using Pierce County's Hydro - Centerlines file, topographic contours, and 2001 Orthophotos. Known streams not previously mapped were hand digitized using the above referenced materials. Offset stream centerlines were shifted using orthophotos and topographic contours. The Puyallup River and Clarks Creek centerlines were extracted from Pierce County's Hydro - Centerlines file. The streams, Puyallup River, and Clarks Creek centerline files were buffered according to stream type (Puyallup Municipal Code 21.06.1010). Type III and Type IV streams were buffered 50', Type III buffer width, because it is unknown which of these lesser streams are Type III or Type IV streams. This is done to encourage further investigation of stream type. Buffers of a segmented stream which had multiple components were dissolved to create a single buffer for that stream segment. The buffers were then merged in reverse order so that the buffer with the highest significance overwrote the lesser stream type buffer width. Finally the buffers were clipped using the uga_polygon.shp to extract only those buffers within the city and urban growth area.
New buffers are added using information provided by a consultant. In some cases the buffer reflects a buffer drawn from the ordinary high water mark whereas some are drawn from the stream centerline. Special care should used when using this information by research the project file and any available reports if available. March 2019 saw major cleanup of this data using the updates Streams feature class. Streams was updated using known information, the existing feature class, and drainage information provided by Josh Grbich of the Collections Department. </stepDesc>
