<idPurp>The purpose of this feature class is to have a highly accurate (1:600 scale or better) general-purpose riverbank database for use byall Pierce County departments. This layer was created using the 2011 LIDAR obtained from the Puget Sound Lidar Consortium. The impetus behind creating this new hydrology database is to update the features based on new data (2011 LIDAR).</idPurp>
<idAbs>&lt;DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"&gt;&lt;DIV&gt;&lt;DIV&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;For this feature class, a riverbank is defined as the area in which a river could possibly migrate. We were able to draw this feature class based on that definition by using a combination of the 2011 LIDAR imagery, 2-foot contours and orthophotos (new and historical). Each of the sources were utilized to provide evidence to where the riverbanks extend to. The decision to capture possible migration channels was chosen to keep a consistent and functional riverbank layer while also establishing an accurate area of where the river could possibly flow. &lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;</idAbs>

<suppInfo>Procedures Used: Pierce County GIS digitized the new riverbank boundaries based on highly accurate data, including LIDAR, Orthophotos and 2-foot contours. Digitizing was performed utilizing all three of the previous data, including historical orthophotography. The riverbanks were first done in arcs. This allowed for easier editing (versus polygons) as for much of the flatter areas 2-foot contours were copied and pasted, not traced. In areas of steep elevation the trace method was used. It was also important to keep both sides of the riverbanks at comparable elevations. Once arcs were completed and each river had a single riverbank, they were converted into polygons.</suppInfo>
