This arc theme shows the rail network for Pierce County. It does not include tracks that have been abandoned. To view abandoned rail lines, use the USGS Railroad coverage or the Railroads_Historic theme listed under the menu in *Countyview. *Countyview is the County's proprietary software for GIS.
This feature class shows the railroad network throughout Pierce County.
Procedures_Used
The railroad arcs were digitized from Pierce County's 2008 orthophotography. Interviews and reviews of preliminary maps of the County's rail lines were conducted with the BNSF Roadmaster and the Union Pacific's signal department. Additional interviews and data was gathered from Tacoma Rail, the Meeker Southern Railroad, the Port of Tacoma, Sound Transit, Tacoma Link, and Amtrak to determine the extent and locations of those railroad's holdings and operations. A Future addition to this coverage will be created from tabular data for public crossings. It is being collected from data sets maintained by the Federal Railway Administration and the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission.]
Revisions As needed. Reviews_Applied_to_Data Visually reviewed as the work was done.
