The school theme was created by the Pierce County GIS Department to identify the locations of Primary, Elementary, Intermediate, Middle, Alternative, Junior and Senior High Schools in Pierce County. These included both Public and Private Schools. This dataset also includes; Universities, Colleges, and Technical Colleges. This theme is intended to be used for various purposes, including: Public Safety, Emergency Response and Planning. All data was compiled from the corresponding school website.

Public Schools are reviewed using the information from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instructions Website. This information is used to determine new schools or schools that have been added or removed and a change of address will indicate the school has been relocated. Telephone number and the school URL also need to be validated with the school website. This information is usually at the bottom of the page. If there are any discrepancies that could be a result of errors in either our data or the school website, the school is contacted for further verification. If the error is in our data it is corrected and if the error is in the school website the school is asked to contact the appropriate person to make the correction. It is important to check the Name, Address, Phone Number and check to see if the website has changed. Colleges and Private Schools
Use the website information that is in the schools layer to verify the information on the website. If the URL is broken it is likely that the school no longer exists. Call the school to find out. Remove the school if it no longer exists.
Check for Geometry errors. Export featureclass to points based on centroid.
nternet-based schools do not get mapped. Preschools are maintained in Child Care Centers. This data contains Kindergarten if they are listed in on the district website.
